Smith’s Towing
Sederick Smith is a true testament to perseverance, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit. His journey began with a dream fueled by a passion for business and a background as a welder. Sederick always felt a drive for entrepreneurship, and shows like South Beach Towing and Highway Thru Hell sparked the vision for his own venture. He finally took the plunge and purchased his first “very old tow truck”, and from there, Smith’s Towing was born.
Starting out, Sederick made a commitment: he would never say “no” to a tow. He meant that in the most literal sense, operating his service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and making himself available to his community at all times. His relentless work ethic began to pay off. As he grew his client base and revenue, he reinvested in his business, purchasing one truck after another. Each time he managed to pay off a truck, he would invest in another, eventually building a fleet of six tow trucks. He recently sold one truck to a company in Georgia, he is now investing in expanding his towing capabilities, having purchased a heavy load truck for large-scale towing operations.
Smith’s Towing is on a path of continuous growth and evolution. Sederick recently bought land to establish a second location and has already begun clearing the lot, laying the foundation for a facility that will offer mechanic services in addition to towing. His vision for the future extends beyond towing: he has aspirations to enter the dump truck industry and pursue government contracting, tapping into new markets for his company.
Sederick credits the Alabama Small Business Development Center (ASBDC) for playing a pivotal role in his success. He fondly recalls working with Larkin Jones, who guided him through the details of setting up his LLC, securing his EIN, and establishing the structure for his business. Ms. Jones’s assistance didn’t stop there; she later helped Sederick develop a website and set up Smith’s Towing’s social media presence, allowing him to reach more customers and grow his brand.
As his business continues to expand, Sederick will be seeking the expertise of the APEX Accelerator team (co-located with the Alabama SBDC since 1986) to explore opportunities in government contracting. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a thriving business with four full-time employees, and Sederick’s unwavering dedication to his craft continues to drive the growth of Smith’s Towing. His story is a powerful example of how a vision, combined with grit and the right resources, can transform a simple idea into a flourishing enterprise.
